Description

Creamy, buttery and delectable. This is the only cream cheese frosting recipe that you will ever need.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces, weight Cream Cheese, Softened
  • 1-½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • ½ cups Butter, Softened
  • 3-½ cups Sifted Powdered Sugar (or More Depending On Desired Consistency)
  • See Variations Below For Chocolate OR Flavored Cream Cheese Frosting

Preparation

1. Cream together cream cheese, vanilla and butter until fluffy.
2. Sift or whisk powdered sugar to aerate it.
3. Stir powdered sugar into cream cheese mixture, 1 cup at a time, until well blended.
4. Makes enough to generously frost a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan, 24 cupcakes, or an 8-inch layer cake.

Notes:
– This makes a medium consistency frosting.
– For a stiff decorator frosting: add more powdered sugar, ½ cup at a time, until desired consistency.
– For a thinner consistency to fill cupcakes or sandwich cookies, add about ½ cup less powdered sugar.
– For chocolate cream cheese frosting: sift ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder to the powdered sugar before adding it to the cream cheese mixture.
– For flavored cream cheese frosting: Substitute the flavored extract of your choice. Maple, lemon, or orange are wonderful.

I like this recipe because it is not overly buttery. I did NOT use the full amount of sugar because I am not into super-duper sweet frosting, I just added and tasted until it was right and probably used about 2/3 the amount in the recipe.

I just could not get mine to thicken up, even after adding more cups of powdered sugar.

This frosting is so good! I will never buy canned frosting again. This was so easy to make, so much easier to work with, and tasted so much better. Canned frosting is a waste of money now that I know about this recipe!
