This sugar cookie recipe comes from my sister, Susie. If you are looking for a sugar cookie that’s a little different from all the rest, this is the one. We think it’s the spice “mace” that makes it so special.
Beat powdered sugar, butter and sour cream in a large mixing bowl.
Add vanilla, mace, egg and honey, mixing until well combined.
In separate bowl combine sifted flour, baking soda and cream of tartar.
Gradually add dry ingredients to butter mixture and stir to combine.
Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 4 hours but I highly recommend overnight.
Roll dough on a floured surface. Dough is very, very sticky. It will take a few times rolling and using the flour before you get the dough just right.
Once you’ve got it rolled out, cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place on a greased cookie sheet or baking stone.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes or until edges are just the lightest of golden brown.
Let cool on wire rack and frost with butter cream frosting recipe below.
For the frosting:
In mixing bowl, cream butter and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk (and food coloring if desired) until well combined and until you reach your desired spreading consistency.
Frost cooled cookies. Add sprinkles and party picks if you wish.
Enjoy!
