These are my grandmother’s recipe and they are amazing! Very cake-like cookies.
Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and molasses, mix well. Sift together dry ingredients and add to molasses mixture with water. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet. (Leave plenty of room, they spread!) Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes. If a toothpick comes out of the center clean, they are done.

I had my doubts as the dough resembled cake batter instead of cookie dough, but they turned out just perfect.
