The mom of one of my old roommates used to make these cookies for us every Christmas. They are sooo good. We call them the taste of Christmas.
In a large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar. Add molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together remaining ingredients and add to the creamed mixture. Mix well. Cover and chill (overnight is best).
Form 1-inch balls, roll each in granulated sugar, and place on a cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes until golden brown.
These cookies can be frozen in Ziploc freezer bags for up to 6 months … if they last that long.

Best cookies ever. I used powdered sugar for the coating, otherwise exact. Came out so good! Thank you for sharing this recipe.

I just made these cookies and they are wonderful! So easy, I had everything in my pantry to whip them up. Thank you!
