A soft and spicy cookie that makes your kitchen smell like fall.
Cream together shortening, brown sugar, egg, and molasses and set aside.
Sift together all dry ingredients and spices.
Combine the shortening mixture with the dry ingredients mixture and stir till combined.
Chill dough for up to one hour or half an hour in the freezer. Dough should be stiff, but pliable.
Roll dough into walnut sized balls. Dip tops into sugar and place sugar side up, three inches apart on greased baking sheet (I never grease, although my grandmother’s instructions say to grease, lol).
Sprinkle the top of each cookie with 2-3 drops of water. This is imperative if you want the crackled finish on the cookie (makes it pretty.)
Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Bake until set but not hard.
Will make 4 dozen cookies.
*My mom is not a fan of ginger so we have left it out before and it still yielded a tasty cookie. We used all-spice in its place and it turned out well.
*These remind me of fall.
