Store-bought pudding cannot begin to compare.
Combine sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. As it starts to heat, gradually add milk, stirring as you go. Bring to a boil then boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Spoon into individual-size plastic containers for lunches. Refrigerate until serving.
Optional: Sprinkle M&M’s or chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups on top when serving.
