Nothing like making food that looks like something else. Everyone will get a kick out of it!
For cake: Preheat oven to 350F. In two separate bowls, combine each box of cake mix with the required oil, eggs and water (according to your box mix instructions). Pour chocolate cake mix into an 8-inch round greased cake pan. Pour 2 cups of yellow cake mix into a second greased 8-inch round pan and the rest of the yellow cake batter into a greased 8-inch round oven safe bowl. Bake 20-25 minutes for 8 inch rounds and about 1 hour for the bowl or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool completely.
Frost chocolate 8 inch cake with chocolate frosting (reserve a small amount of chocolate frosting for the ‘bun frosting’ in the next step), sprinkle sides with crushed chocolate cookies – this will be your hamburger ‘patty’. Set aside.
Mix a small amount of chocolate frosting with the white frosting (reserve 8 Tablespoons of white frosting for the condiments frostings in the next step) and add a few drops of yellow and red food coloring to make hamburger bun colored frosting. Trim the bowl shaped cake to make the top rounded like the top of a bun. Frost 8-inch yellow cake and bowl cake with the bun frosting.
For condiments: Mix 4 tablespoons white frosting with yellow food coloring until it’s the color of mustard and set aside. Mix 4 tablespoons of white frosting with red food coloring until it’s the color of tomatoes. Frost chocolate chip cookies with ‘tomato’ frosting and set aside – these will be your tomatoes. On wax paper sprinkled with granulated sugar roll out the spearmint gumdrops flat to look like leaves of lettuce.
Place 8-inch bottom “bun” on cake platter, top with the chocolate cake “patty”. Drizzle “mustard” frosting on patty, top with lettuce and tomatoes. Place bowl cake on top and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Enjoy the look on your guests face!
