These really are a favorite for the holidays! It’s a family recipe that was a tradition in our family growing up, and now my girls love making these too! They are not only fun to decorate, but so good, soft and chewy.
Cream shortening, butter, and sugar in a mixer until light and fluffy. Slowly add orange juice, eggs, and vanilla until combined. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, salt and baking powder. Spoon the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until well blended. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator overnight to chill.
In the morning, roll out onto a floured surface to 1/4″ thickness and cut with cookie cutters. Bake in a 325-degree oven on greased cookie sheets for about 10 minutes or until slightly browned. Remove onto wire racks and let cool completely before decorating with icing.
