Description

These cookies are exactly like the ones you find at Whole Foods—ooey, gooey, and chocolatey!

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces, weight Powdered Sugar
  • 2 ounces, weight Cocoa Power
  • ¼ teaspoons Salt
  • 3 whole Egg Whites
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Stir dry ingredients together in a stand mixer. Turn mixer on low and add egg whites one at a time—the batter will be very dry until the last egg white. Add vanilla and turn mixer on high for 2 minutes.

Spoon batter onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove from the oven. Let cool completely before eating.

hookem1127 – I have had comments from others saying they needed either less/more time beating the egg whites. I’m assuming since everyone’s mixer is different, that may be the case. I did beat mine for about a full 2 minutes and they were airy, but not quite peaked. If you bake them again, I would beat them a little longer. Keep me posted!

I attempted these last night and the flavor was SO GOOD, but I am wondering if I didn’t mix them long enough? They were really flat and lifeless and they didn’t really resemble your lovely picture! They were almost like chocolate crackers…should the batter be almost whipped and airy like peaked egg whites? I really want to make these again!

Made these tonight to put in my kids’ lunchboxes since they love love love the ones from Whole Foods. Super easy and super yummy! The only thing is that I didn’t smoosh them down correctly or something because they came out looking (and excuse me for this) like dog poo. Not to worry- we’ve already eaten most poo-like ones and are saving the prettier ones for school. My 3 taste-testers thank you for a stellar recipe!

I’ve never had the ones at Whole Foods (never been there, actually), but I just made these and they’re AMAZING! The first tray I made were a bit too big, so they broke apart. For the second tray, I used a melon baller instead of 2 teaspoons, and it worked like a charm. They got a bit burned on the bottom, though–probably because I used a dark cookie sheet. The first batch stuck to the sheet a lot as well (even though it’s brand new, non-stick), so I lined the second one w/ parchment paper.

Thanks for the recipe!

Just tried to make these today…fail! I am so sad about it too. I was pretty excited about these. Looked easy and yummy. I tried 2 batches. First one burned, second was flat and gooey. Not sure what I did wrong. My measurements were pretty exact and with the second batch I adjusted the time and watched them close. Bummer.

I made these last week and thought they were very easy to make and absolutely delicious. I only had special dark cocoa so they were a gorgeous deep dark color – they almost had a coffee taste to them. These are kind of like a tootsie-roll in cookie form. I gave them to my gluten-free friend and she loved them. I will definitely make again. Thanks for the recipe.

Easy and fun. I had never tried the whole foods ones, but I love meringue cookies and chocolate, so I knew I had to try them.
I had a problem with the weight measurements because I don’t have kitchen scale. I used about 2 3/4 cups of powdered sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder, and I think they are how they are supposed to be. I used parchment paper and a silicon baking mat and the cookies stuck when they were warm, but they came off easily when they cooled. I made smaller and larger cookies and the smaller ones (heaping teaspoon) cracked less. Thanks for sharing!
