Description

Nice and cozy treat for these cold nights.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE TOPPING:
  • 1-¼ cup Flour
  • 10 Tablespoons Sugar
  • ½ teaspoons Sea Salt
  • ¾ teaspoons Cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoons Allspice
  • ⅛ teaspoons Nutmeg
  • 1 cup Oatmeal
  • 10 Tablespoons Butter (cold And Cut Into Tiny Pieces)
  • _____
  • FOR FILLING:
  • ½ cups Sugar
  • ½ sticks Butter, Diced
  • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 2-¾ pounds Apples (approximately 6 Small Apples, Peeled And Diced)

Preparation

To make your topping:

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. Add oatmeal and toss in the pieces of butter and, using your fingertips, squash it into the dry ingredients until small clumps the size of peas form. Don’t worry about having uniform sizes, just be sure the butter is evenly dispersed. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. This step can be done a day ahead.

Now make your filling:
Preheat the oven to 375º and have an 9 x 13 x2 inch (ungreased) glass baking dish ready to go.

Place the sugar and butter into a large skillet and stir over medium heat until a smooth sauce forms. Add the lemon juice and continue to cook, stirring until the caramel is a medium to deep brown. It will take 5-8 minutes but mine took a little longer. Keep your eyes on it, you want the caramel color. You will be baking this too so don’t burn the caramel. Set a little aside for drizzling. Combine salt and diced apples and put them into the skillet with your caramel mixture. Toss until they are evenly coated with caramel. Pour apples and caramel into the baking dish. Spread them around in an even layer. Sprinkle with the chilled topping.

Bake for about 50 minutes or until the apples are tender (test carefully by piercing with a fork). The sauce will thicken and the topping should be golden. Remove from oven and place on a wire rack. Wait at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve it with ice cream and drizzle with caramel sauce.
You can also serve it the next day as long as it is tightly covered.
Enjoy!

I made this today for a family member who loves all things apple. I am not a huge warm fruit lover, but after having my hands in it and smelling the scrumptious smells from the oven I had to try it. It was delicious and all eaten – and chosen above a few other desserts! My husband told me that it was a keeper and I agree! We did have store bought caramel sauce on the side just in case, but didn’t really need it.

I bought a variety of apples, using 2 Honeycrisp, 2 Brauburn, and 2 Granny Smith. I also misplaced my measuring spoons so I estimated on some of the ingredients but it still turned out AMAZING. It was the perfect amount of sweet and crunch. Husband loved it, I will be making it again!

We bought Rome apples and neither of us liked them (raw) so I thought about making baked apples. I found this recipe and decided to make this instead. It was the best idea I’ve ever had. It was delicious! I am going to make this again at the next family dinner.
