These are my Aunt’s County Fair award-winning cookies. They are IMHO the very best cookies ever!
1. Cream shortening, butter, sugar and brown sugar.
2. Combine egg and vanilla in small bowl, whisk together thoroughly.
3. Add egg mixture to the butter mixture and blend well.
4. Combine all dry ingredients in small bowl.
5. Slowly add dry ingredients to the wet (by hand if you do not have a Kitchen Aid type mixer).
6. Drop 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. I make small cookies using about a tablespoon of dough per cookie.
7. Bake at 350F for 10-11 minutes. I usually pull them out at 11 minutes then leave them on the cookie sheet for 1 additional minute before transferring them to a cooling rack.
I don’t think I have ever made this recipe without doubling it. In the doubled version, I use nearly 3 teaspoons of vanilla – I am very generous with the vanilla!

My batter was very crumbly… like biscuit batter. Then the cookies didn’t melt at all, they stayed in the shape I put them on the cookie sheet. I’m sure this was due to my over-handling them to get them into balls. Now I have cake-like crispy-on-the outside cookies. Is this how they should be? I followed the recipe too (first time ever). They are yummy but not chocolate chip cookie like. I wonder what I did wrong…

I only use the regular Crisco. I think I made it once with the butter flavor and it was just not very good. I think it had sort of a fake butter taste. Sorry I didn’t see this until now!
angelakd- I’m so glad you like them! I try to limit making them – pretty much only make them at Christmas because I have to self control when it comes to eating them!

Made these for the second time tonight and they turned out perfect both times. This recipe has replaced my old favorite choc. chip cookie recipe. Thanks for sharing!

Do you recommend using butter flavored shortening or does it matter???? What did you other guys use?

These were wonderful, although I might just have to double the recipe next time, as the cookie dough was so tasty, not much of it made it to the oven!
