Description

This is my great-grandma’s recipe for applesauce cake. It smells so good when it’s cooking because of all the wonderful spices. I leave out the raisins. I feel so lucky to have this recipe and hope you enjoy it too!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Vegetable Or Canola Oil
  • 2 cups White Sugar
  • 2 cups Unsweetened Applesauce
  • 3 cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1-½ teaspoon Cloves
  • 1-½ teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1-½ teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 cup Raisins
  • 2 cups Chopped Walnuts Or Pecans

Preparation

Cream together oil, sugar and applesauce with a mixer.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add to the mixer and mix till combined.

Stir in raisins and nuts.

Use shortening to grease a tube pan well and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or maybe a little longer, depending on your oven. Let cool for about 15 minutes.

My great-grandmother would give these as gifts at Christmas time.

I thought the same things when I got the recipe from my great aunt. But it does not use eggs. It’s a very old recipe. My aunt said my great-grandma would use part butter and part lard. My aunt modified it to use the vegetable/canola oil, but didn’t change anything else.
Thanks for asking! :)

Hi,
I saw this recipe on other sites and those include an egg. Can you let us know?

Hmm….I noticed that the cake doesn’t call for any eggs. Is that correct? I really want to try this, but want to make sure the ingredients are all there before I do. Thank you.

I didn’t expect much from this cake, but had a lot of applesauce to use up so I made it. It was AWESOME! My family loved it. I made exactly as listed… except I used 1/2 cup raisin and 1/2 cup dates simply because I didn’t have enough raisins on had (both were great in it) and I topped with a dusting of powdered sugar. Great fall recipe! Thanks for sharing.

made this recipe tonight and loved it! i did make a few adjustments, though: i replaced the oil with two mashed bananas, cut the sugar to 1 cup, and i used whole wheat flour instead of the traditional white. even with the changes, it was a fantastic recipe – i couldn’t stop eating it!
