Description

This is a much easier way to get the taste of apple dumplings and use up apples galore! If you love apple desserts, this will become a regular in your apple rotation. It’s very rich, so start with a small piece :)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Flour
  • 1-½ teaspoon Salt
  • 4 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1-½ cup Crisco Or Shortening
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 7 whole Apples, Cored, Peeled And Sliced
  • 1-½ cup Sugar
  • ¼ teaspoons Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1-½ cup Water
  • ¼ cups Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice

Preparation

Mix together flour, salt, baking powder, shortening, and milk. Pat half of the mixture into a 9×13 greased baking dish (I use glass). Cover dough with about 7 peeled and sliced apples. Pat the rest of the dough over this. (By the way, this is ‘rough’ because it’s hard to pat evenly. It doesn’t matter, comes out great anyway!)

Boil sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, water, butter, and lemon juice, stirring occasionally. Pour sauce over all and bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes.

Note: this is rich, so you don’t need as much as other apple desserts in one sitting. It freezes great, which is good because it makes a lot!

just made this and it smells heavenly in the oven! a trick I thought of fr ease in getting the top crust on in a somewhat uniform manner is to press out the dough on greased wax paper in aprox a 9×13 rectangle then just invert onto your apple layer and peel the wax paper off. viola! pretty crust all in one piece :)
