Description

Homemade granola bars, with equal parts crunch and sweetness, that leave you full for hours.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups Old Fashioned Oats
  • 4 Tablespoons Butter, Melted
  • ¼ cups Canola Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1-½ cup Rice Krispies
  • 1-½ cup Wheat Germ
  • ¾ cups Nuts, Chopped (I Used Sliced Almonds And Walnuts)
  • ½ cups Dried Cranberries
  • 1-½ teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 cup Light Brown Sugar
  • ½ cups Honey
  • ¼ cups Apple Sauce
  • ¼ cups Molasses
  • 3-½ teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF.

2. In a large bowl toss oats with melted butter, canola oil and salt. On 2 rimmed baking sheets, spread out the oats evenly. Toast for 15-20 minutes, making sure to stir/shake the pan twice so the oats don’t burn. Then remove the pans from the oven and set aside.

3. Reduce oven temperature to 325ºF.

4. In a large bowl, mix the toasted oats, Rice Krispies, wheat germ, nuts, cranberries and cinnamon. Set aside.

5. In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, honey, applesauce and molasses. Heat slowly, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.

6. Pour sugar mixture into dry ingredients and stir really well. It’ll be sticky!

7. Press into a greased (I used butter) 9×12 baking pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

8. Let cool completely (may take a few hours). Cut with a sharp knife. Store in tight container or individually wrapped in plastic.

We loved these! The only thing I will do differently next time is to bake them in a larger pan. Mine were extremely thick and didn’t hold together really well. Refrigerating them helped but I think this modification will help them not have to be refrigerated. But, overall delicious!

These are delicious! I followed the recipe exactly. The nuts I put in were slivered almonds. I have five in my family (hubby, me, twin 5 year olds, and a 14 year old) – all five of us have devoured these. AMAZING!

After trying many, this is the best granola recipe we have found. Made with cranberries and walnuts but want to try other fruit/nut combinations. Especially love the texture.
