This syrup is amazingly delicious! Once you have tried it, you will never be satisfied with the cheap store bought maple syrup. It is so yummy! You can use brown sugar for more of a caramel flavor.
In a large saucepan, bring first three ingredients to a boil over medium heat.
Remove from heat and stir in soda and vanilla. It will bubble up a lot! As it cools, the bubbles will go away.
Notes:
-I have also made this with 1/4 cup of butter and it works fine.
-You can substitute 1 tsp of coconut extract for the vanilla for coconut syrup. It is also wonderful!

As there are only 2 of us in the house, I used half the buttermilk and substituted agave for the sugar and used about 3 tablespoons of butter. Yum…thanks for sharing.

Hey, Craftymom I tried this today and the entire family LOVED it…delicious! I only used 1/4 c. butter, and raw sugar instead of refined, and it was plenty rich for us! I’m thinking it would be wonderful drizzled over cake, too…mmmmm… Thanks so much for sharing!

We’ve made this syrup recipe for years–its in our family cookbook. Everyone loves it because it is mild with a buttery flavor. It goes great with Ina Garten’s banana pancakes, The Barefoot Contessa.
If you add a little Jack Daniels, it makes a great sauce for bread pudding.
