Description

We serve this every Christmas morning and for brunch! I have tried many similar recipes and this is the best that I have found!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Challah Bread
  • 1 stick Butter
  • 8 ounces, weight Package Cream Cheese
  • ¾ pounds Grated Cheddar Or Longhorn Cheese
  • 8 whole Eggs
  • 2 cups Milk
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ teaspoons Dry Mustard
  • 1 dash Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Chives, Minced

Preparation

Tear bread in chunks. Place evenly in a well greased casserole dish. Melt butter and pour it over the bread.

Warm cream cheese in the microwave. Beat together both cheeses, eggs, milk, salt, mustard, cayenne pepper and chives. Pour over the bread. Refrigerate, covered, overnight.

Bake covered in an oven preheated to 325F for one hour or until egg mixture is set. Uncover for the last 10 minutes of baking time.

Update on my review – still making this 9 years later and everyone still loves it. Always add at least 1/2 lb sausage. Does not need to be challah bread – I’ve used various white breads. Also to up the creaminess sub part of the milk with evaporated milk. I discovered this by accident when I didn’t have enough milk and was halfway through making this. That day I really got great responses to it! LOL

This was a wonderful addition to our Christmas morning. I also added a layer of sausage — very filling and tasty. Will definitely make this again. Thank you!

I made this the other day for a breakfast at work, and I received many compliments. I added a layer of sausage to it, and it was perfect.

Forgot to review it the first time I made it – sorry! This went over big at a brunch I brought it to. I did add a layer of cooked pork sausage also. What I also liked is that it froze well and reheated easily in the microwave so I treated myself to some yummy work breakfasts! Am making again today!

I made this recipe to rave reviews. More than one person said to me that I had to give them the recipe. I have made similar overnight casseroles before, but I think the difference is in the preparation. Best of all, it’s very very easy to put together! I highly recommend it.

I’ve made this two more times since Christmas morning, and it was well-received at both events.
