Description

These fun owl-shaped cookies with a chocolate center, chocolate chip eyes, and cashew beak are great for Halloween or anytime!

Ingredients

  • 2-½ cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ¾ cups Shortening
  • 1 cup Firmly Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1-½ piece (squares) Unsweetened Chocolate
  • ¼ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 24 pieces Chocolate Chips
  • 12 whole Cashews

Preparation

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Set aside.

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add egg and vanilla extract, beating well.

Melt unsweetened chocolate or mix cocoa and shortening, and set aside.

Mix dry and wet ingredients together.

Remove 2/3 of dough to floured board and let sit for a few minutes.

Stir baking soda into chocolate.

Blend chocolate mixture into remaining dough in bowl .

Refrigerate bowl of dough at least 1/2 hour.

Roll out half of light dough to 10×4 inch strip.

Shape half of chocolate dough into a 10-inch roll, place in center of light dough strip.

Mold sides of light dough around dark dough.

Chill 2 hours.

Cut into uniform 1/4 in. slices.

Place 2 slices together on greased cookie sheet, pinching each slice to resemble owl tufts. Place cashew in center
for beak. Place chocolate chips to resemble eyes.

Bake 8-10 minutes in 350 degree oven. Be careful not to over bake.
