Description

The BEST spice cookies for Christmas. Or anytime!

Ingredients

  • ¾ cups Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 cup Packed Golden Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoons Ground Black Pepper
  • ¼ teaspoons Ground Allspice
  • ¼ teaspoons Ground Cloves
  • 1 whole Egg
  • ¼ cups Molasses
  • 2-¼ cups Flour
  • Granulated Or Sanding Sugar, For Rolling Cookies

Preparation

This recipe makes approximately 60 cookies.

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

Beat shortening in a large bowl. Add brown sugar, soda, and spices, and beat until combined. Beat in egg and molasses until combined.

Beat in flour (it will be very stiff).

Shape dough into 1″ balls. Roll in granulated or sanding sugar and place 2″ apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until set and tops are crackled.

This is a wonderful, chewy-in-the-center cookie (or you can make it crunchy by cooking it longer), and my very favorite. I love to seal these in cellophane bags and give them to family at Christmas, all tied up with pretty bows.
