My favorite Christmas family tradition: decorating cookies together.
Mix together sugar, butter, egg, milk, and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, and salt (use a dry ingredient sifter if you have one).
Combine dry ingredients slowly into wet while stirring. Add food coloring to the dough.
Chill dough in the fridge at least 1 hour before making cookies.
Preheat oven to 400ºF. Roll out dough with a rolling pin one batch at a time. Use cookie cutters to cut dough into Christmas shapes. Using a spatula, place shapes onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Decorate cookies as desired.
Bake cookies for 4 minutes only (or take out as soon as you start to see the edges begin to brown). Cookies should be slightly underdone. Remove from baking sheet immediately and let cookies sit on a cooling rack for a few minutes before serving.
