Description

We make these cookies every year. They’re great for ANY holiday, especially with the appropriate cookie cutters. Think sugar cookies, only not. Serving size depends on the size of cookie cutter you use.

Hint: The burnt ones taste REALLY good unfrosted, so don’t throw them away!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups White Sugar
  • 2 sticks Margarine
  • 3 whole Eggs
  • 1 cup Sour Cream
  • 5 cups Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Salt

Preparation

1. Cream together sugar, margarine, eggs, and sour cream.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients.

3. Roll out the dough on a floured surface (flour your hands, too—this gets sticky). Make sure the dough isn’t too thin. Use cookie cutters to cut out cookies (you can make these seasonal for fun).

4. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

5. Frost using tinted frosting and decorate using candy and sprinkles. #1 Frosting Recipe (see my recipe box) is a great complement to these cookies.

Laura – My grandmother makes these cookies, too, and she uses butter for everything. My mom tends to use margarine and I have a feeling she substituted margarine into the recipe. I can find out for sure if you want, but I’d imagine it would be just fine.

Has anyone substituted butter for the margarine? I always have butter, but never margarine, in the frig.

This is very, very similar to my family recipe for Christmas cookies, and I can attest that these are the best cookies ever! They stay nice and soft for quite a long time. I add cinnamon and nutmeg to the batter to give it a little extra holiday taste. Deeeelicious!
