Description

All the flavor of a mix, with no funky additives or preservatives! The benefits to making your own mix are obvious: you can customize it all you want, you know exactly what’s in it, and if you buy them in bulk, the spices can be dirt cheap!

Ingredients

  • 4-½ cups Water
  • 1 stick Cinnamon
  • 1 piece Fresh Ginger Chopped
  • 7 whole Cardamom Pods
  • 2 whole Star Anise Pods
  • 10 whole Cloves
  • ¼ teaspoons Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • ½ teaspoons Freshly-ground Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon Orange Zest
  • 10 teaspoons Green Or Black Tea Or 10 Tea Bags
  • ⅔ cups Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla

Preparation

Bring the water to a boil. Add the spices and tea, remove from heat and let steep 15-20 minutes, depending on how strong you want it. Strain and add the brown sugar, honey, and vanilla. Stir to combine.

Mix 1 part concentrate with 1 part milk, heat and enjoy or pour over ice.

For a stronger flavor, mix 2 parts concentrate with 1 part milk or half-and-half (if you’re like me).

This concentrate will keep in the fridge for around 2 weeks. Freeze it in an icecube tray and add to smoothies!

Hi Laura! This recipe was also featured in the Tasty Kitchen Blog (https://tastykitchen.com/blog/2011/01/step-by-step-amazing-spiced-chai-concentrate/) and 3 large ginger “coins” were used, smashed for extra flavor. Hope that helps!

The recipe calls for 1 piece of fresh ginger chopped, what size piece are you using?

Heather: Use more cinnamon, ginger and black pepper for a spicier taste. If you don’t like the tea flavor, you can brew the spices alone just the same.

Love this! I made it in batches, packaged and labelled it beautifully and gave it as a gift to my friends and neighbors. They loved it and gave me many compliments!

I just made this two days ago and I feel like it is almost perfect for me but needs to be a little more spicy and a little less tea taste (I am not a tea fan but I love the Chai Lattes at Starbucks)! Any ideas on which spice I should use more of to get a more spicy taste? I will try less sugar like some other people have said and see if that works..just wondering if anyone has some other ideas?? This is so new to me and I’m used to Starbucks :/

I’m enjoying this although, like nearly everyone, I will be making modifications. I suggest drinking this with warm milk, rather than cold. It brings out more of the spice.

Excellent recipe!! I did make a few modifications that anyone who uses Young Living Essential Oils might want to try… I halved the amount of nutmeg and added 2 drops of YL Nutmeg essential oil, added 1 drop of YL Cinnamon Bark essential oil, and then added 4-6 drops of YL Orange essential oil… DIVINE!!

Made this last night after having the recipe on my shelf for ages and was very pleased with the result! Totally delicious with my almond milk on ice. I’ll try heating them up together this afternoon.

Next time I make this I will be adding much more pepper (I like it spicy!) and less brown sugar (little too sweet for my taste). Mmm yum!

I am trying to cut down on sugar so I omitted the brown sugar altogether but otherwise stuck to the recipe. It’s GREAT! Thanks so much for this recipe.
