Description

Longing for a Patty Melt? It’s entirely possible on a low carb diet. The caraway seeds added to the sandwich mimic the flavor of rye bread. Suitable for Atkins, Keto, LCHF, low carb, diabetic, low glycemic, gluten free, grain free, sugar free, nut free.

Ingredients

  • 1-½ Tablespoon Salted Butter, Divided
  • 1 slice Yellow Onion (About 1/4-inch Thick), Halved
  • ¼ teaspoons Caraway Seeds
  • 3 ounces, weight Ground Beef 85/15
  • Salt And Pepper, to taste
  • 3 drops (approximately) Lea & Perrin Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ ounces, fluid Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • ½ ounces, fluid Shredded Monterey Jack Cheese (Or Swiss Cheese)
  • 2 slices Aunt Rocky's Magic Dough Loaf (See Separate Recipe On Tasty Kitchen)

Preparation

In a medium size skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter.

Slice onion, and cut slice in half. Separate layers and add to melted butter. Cook on medium-low heat until onion is browned and caramelized. Stir frequently. When onions are nearly finished, add caraway seeds and stir in.

While onion is cooking, season ground beef with salt and pepper to taste, and add a few drops of Worcestershire sauce. Mix well, and form a patty a little larger than your bread slices. Fry in a separate skillet.

Measure out the cheeses, keeping them separate.

When onions are caramelized and burger patty is fried, transfer onions to the top of the burger patty and set aside.

Over medium heat, melt remaining butter in the pan used for the onions. Put down 1 slice of bread, one of the cheeses, the burger patty with onions on top, the remaining cheese, and the other slice of bread. Cook until the bottom bread is well browned. Pick up the sandwich with a spatula, get any butter remaining in the pan toward the center, flip the sandwich, and cook side two. (If you didn’t end up with enough butter for the second side, add a little more before flipping the sandwich.)

Serve immediately.

Note: To lower calories and carbs, omit the bread and serve wrapped in lettuce. Subtract 2 net carbs and 174 calories for omitting the Aunt Rocky’s bread. You would also be losing some fats, but overall macros would still be good for Keto.
