Description

Take that classic treat from when you were a wee tot and crank it up a notch.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cups All-purpose Flour
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 box (18.25 Oz. Box) Chocolate Or Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1 box (3.4 Oz. Box) Vanilla Or Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix
  • 3 whole Eggs
  • ¼ cups Vegetable Oil
  • 1-¼ cup Water
  • ½ cups Butter Or Margarine
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • ¼ cups Shortening
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

To make the paste, mix flour and milk in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until thick and creamy. Set the paste aside.

In a separate bowl, mix cake mix, pudding, eggs, oil, and water. Pour into a greased 9×13 cake pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until cake comes clean when poked with a knife or toothpick. Cool completely.

Once cake is cooled, slice horizontally in half and separate the halves. (It may be easier to place the removed half on a kitchen towel to help in a later step!)

In a mixer, combine butter, sugar, shortening, and vanilla. Mix well. Add cooled paste from first step and beat until just fluffy. Add to one half of the cake and spread evenly.

Return second cake half to the top of the other cake half. This step is tricky and may be made easier with the aid of the kitchen towel.

Slice and enjoy!

Ooh, this is a family favorite for us, but I’ve always just made the cake according to the package directions. I will try your recipe next time. I always sprinkle the top with powdered sugar-just to make it prettier.
