Ingredients

  • 1 box (18.25 Oz. Box) Devil's Food Chocolate Cake Mix, Prepared As Directed On The Package
  • 1-¼ cup Milk
  • 5 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1 stick Butter, Room Temperature
  • 1 cup Shortening
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • _____
  • FOR THE FROSTING:
  • 4-½ cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 cup Cocoa
  • 1-½ stick Butter
  • ½ cups Milk, Or More As Needed
  • 1-½ teaspoon Pure Vanilla

Preparation

CAKE:
Prepare Devil’s Food cake according to package directions in a 13 x 9 inch pan.

After the cake has cooled, cut cake in half horizontally so you have a top and a bottom. Use a serrated knife—I have seen Alton Brown use dental floss to cut cakes in half, but I have never tried it!

FILLING:
In a small saucepan, heat milk and gradually stir in flour. Continue to cook over medium high heat (stirring) until milk mixture is thick and smooth. Set aside and let cool.

While milk mixture is cooling; beat butter and shortening with a mixer until combined. Add sugar and the cooled milk mixture. Continue to beat until it reaches the consistency of Ho-Ho filling—you’ll know!

FROSTING:
Combine powdered sugar and cocoa.
Melt butter.
In a mixing bowl, combine the cocoa and sugar with the melted butter. Continue to mix and gradually add milk.
Add vanilla. Your fudgy frosting is ready!

CONSTRUCTION:
Spread filling on the bottom half of the cake.
Add the top layer. It should look like a giant Suzy-Q now.
Frost all four sides and top with chocolate frosting.
