Description

Apple pie in bar form—my man’s favorite!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE CRUST:
  • 1 whole Egg Yolk Plus Enough Water To Make 2/3 Cup
  • 2-½ cups Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Shortening, Slightly Softened
  • FOR THE FILLING:
  • 2 cups Corn Flakes
  • 5 whole Large Apples
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 whole Egg White
  • FOR THE GLAZE:
  • 1 cup Icing Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 3 Tablespoons Hot Water, Or More

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 F.

For the crust:

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and water until combined.

In the bowl of a stand mixer combine the flour, salt and shortening. With a dough hook, mix in the egg yolk mixture until everything is combined. Divide dough into 2 parts, one a little larger than the other. Roll out or pat the larger portion of dough into a 10×15 pan. Refrigerate the remaining dough for rolling later.

For the filling:

Crush the corn flakes and spread them over the crust.

Peel, core, and shred the apples. Spread apples over the corn flakes in the pan. Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl, then sprinkle it over the apples.

Roll out the remaining dough to the size of the pan and place it on top.

Beat the egg white for 1-2 minutes and brush it over the top crust.

Bake for 30-35 minutes. Cool 10 minutes and then glaze it.

For the glaze:

Stir together the glaze ingredients, adding the water if needed. Pour over the bars. Allow glaze to cool and set, then cut into bars.
