This recipe was a dinner saver! I bought shells and tortillas, thinking the taco seasoning mix was included. When I realized it wasn’t I remembered seeing your recipe on TastyKitchen and immediately logged in. It was wonderful. I think it tasted better than the commercial stuff, although that might have been skewed a little by knowing that I had made it myself. My guests never knew. Thanks!

I mixed up a batch of this today to use in a recipe that called for a partial packet of taco seasoning. It was better than the store-bought stuff, especially since I had a packet on-hand to compare the ingredients list. I think I’ll switch to using this recipe instead of buying the packets anymore. I even had an empty spice bottle from garlic salt, so I recycled it to hold the taco seasoning so I can have it ready all the time. Thanks for the great recipe!

I have been making my own taco seasoning for a few months now to avoid the cornstarch in packaged varieties. I’ve been tinkering around with this one for several months. It’s pretty good as is, but I cut out the red pepper flakes and used chopped onion cooked with the meat instead of dried minced onion. Very good!

Very pleased with this seasoning. I am trying to rely on homemade items more than store bought seasonings so this was perfect. This mix is a little spicier than I anticipated so I will use a little less than 2 TBSPs on 1 lb of meat next time.

Recently, I had to remove starches & processed sugars from my diet. I couldn’t believe how many taco seasonings & etc had these added to them. Thank you for a great recipe!

Oh gosh that’s embarrassing – I’ve used this recipe plenty of times and haven’t rated it yet! Shame on me! LOL This is such a great recipe – I love that you can control what you put into it and a great way to use up dried spices. It’s wonderful that you can make this at home and not have to go to the store and buy a packet with questionable ingredients! Best of all it tastes GREAT! Love this and will be using it time and time again! Thank you so much!

This had wonderful flavor! A little spicy, but I will use less red pepper flakes next time. It’s wonderful to have on hand!

Thanks for the recipe. It looks wonderful! I usually just throw in my seasonings when I cook, but this will be sooo handy to have all mixed up. I’m printing out the recipe to have handy to mix up. I will be mixing a couple batches and storing in a jar. Happy cooking!

About how much would you use per pound of meat?
jbl12 on 3.10.2010
I was wondering the same. 1-2 tbls per pound?

I use 1-2 tablespoons per pound of meat. I use more if I’m using turkey or chicken, less if I’m using beef or bison. Enjoy!

I liked it! I used a tablespoon with a pound of cooked and drained ground beef simmered for about 3 minutes with about a 1/4 cup of water. This was the perfect amount to me, as the packaged mixes are way overpowering to my taste.
