Description

The perfect casserole for a weekend morning (or Easter morning). What I love about this casserole is you can make it the night before and throw it into the oven in the morning. I love the crispy top and the soft center. Drizzled with agave nectar, it is a tantalizing and mouth watering breakfast casserole.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Whole Wheat Or White French Bread
  • 8 whole Eggs
  • 3 cups Low Fat Or Skim Millk
  • ½ cups White Sugar, Divided
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 4 teaspoons Cinnamon
  • Agave Nectar Or Maple Syrup, To Serve

Preparation

Lightly spray a pan with nonstick cooking spray. Line the bottom of the pan with bread cubes. In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk and 2 tablespoons of the sugar (or Splenda). Pour the egg mixture over the bread. Dot with butter; let stand for about 10 minutes before placing in the oven. For a better flavor, cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, or after 10 minutes, mix the remaining sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and sprinkle over the top. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden. Top with a light layer of agave nectar or pure maple syrup.

This recipe can easily be halved. If halving recipe, use an 8×8 inch pan. It will serve 4-6 people. A larger serving will feed 6-8 people.

This was amazing. I used Maple Syrup for the topping, as it’s impossible to get agave nectar here in Australia, but it was so delicious with the syrup.

I’m definitely starting a new Easter breakfast tradition with this!

Excellent! I especially appreciate that it isn’t soaked in butter and heavy cream. This lighter version is perfect and very tasty. A touch of maple syrup is all it needs.

Easy, quick, and made the house smell nice. But it is rather bland–like a mix between french toast and bread pudding without being as good as either one is on its own. I did let it soak overnight, and it was still bland, so I would strongly suggest against not doing the soaking (I suspect it would have less flavor still).

Easy, quick recipe. Fired it up on a Sunday night with a fresh extra loaf of homemade French bread. Threw it in the oven Monday morning and was ready for the kids to devour when they got up. Thanks for this one.

I used a loaf od Honey Oat bread since that’s what I had. It still turned out great! Just the right sweetness!
