Description

This is an old family “use up” recipe. My grandmother has made these my entire life and they are always great. My mother would use leftover hot dog buns, hamburger buns, the heels of bread. It is a fabulous way to use up old sandwich bread.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices Sandwich Bread
  • 1-½ stick Melted Butter
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon

Preparation

Heat oven to 350 degrees (F) and line a baking sheet with aluminum or parchment for easy clean up.

Melt the butter in one bowl.

Mix the brown sugar, powdered sugar and cinnamon in another bowl. You may or may not have more than you need. The fresher the bread, the easier it absorbs the melted butter and the more the sugar mixture sticks. Stale bread doesn’t absorb as much butter and doesn’t hold as much sugar, which is fine.

Make two stacks of of bread, three to four pieces high. Cut the bread into three sections “lengthwise.” Most in our family prefer the middles so we cut the crusts off the sides. Leave the crusts on the top and bottom for stability.

Dip the bread into the melted butter, both sides, and then dredge in the sugar mixture and coat evenly. Place the prepared pieces on the baking sheet.

When all of the pieces have been dipped, bake for 10 -15 minutes until golden and a little sugar has melted on the baking sheet. Let cool for 5 minutes and then serve with coffee, milk, or as an accompaniment to bacon and eggs.

Bread, butter, sugar, cinnamon–what’s not to love!

I always follow recipes to the letter, but when I was reading this one, two cups of sugar seemed like an awful lot to coat eight pieces of bread. I only mixed half of the sugar/cinnamon at first but used the same amount of butter. I had enough to generously coat eighteen of the twenty-four pieces, and mixed up another quarter of a batch to finish it out. I also ran out of butter before I got them all dipped, so I melted another half-stick and had a bit left over.

I was a mess–part of that could have been me, but it’s not a tidy process.

The results were completely worth the mess. Enjoy them warm.
