Description

These European-style sweet rolls are not overly sweet and are perfect for an afternoon snack or holiday bread basket.

Ingredients

  • ½ cups Whole Milk, Warm
  • 1 envelope Active Dry Yeast (1/4th Ounce)
  • ¼ cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cardamom
  • 2-½ Tablespoons Unsalted Butter, Softened
  • 1 whole Egg, Beaten Gently
  • 2-¼ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter, Softened
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoons Granulated Sugar (for Filling)
  • 1 whole Egg, Beaten With A Tiny Amount Of Warm Water

Preparation

In a small bowl, combine the yeast and warm milk and let sit for five minutes for the yeast to dissolve.

Then pour the yeast mixture into the bowl of a Kitchen Aid mixer and add the sugar, cardamom, two and a half tablespoons of softened butter and beaten egg. Mix for three minutes on medium speed. Add the flour and salt and mix on high speed for six minutes, until the dough becomes a smooth and elastic ball.

Place dough ball in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise for two hours. It will double in size.

Punch down dough on a floured surface and roll out into a wide rectangle. Using your fingers, smoosh the 3 Tablespoons of soft butter across the top of the dough and then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar to thoroughly coat. Roll up your dough, starting from the left side, and then slice the roll into 1 inch rolls.

Place rolls on a lined baking sheet, cover and let stand for thirty minutes.

Brush with beaten egg and bake for twenty minutes at 350F, until brown and golden.
