After my mother passed away, I was going through all of her recipe books and binders when I came across this recipe. During World War I, there was a shortage of many food items and many women had to make do. This has neither eggs, milk or butter.
Mix brown sugar, hot water and shortening in a medium-size pan. Add raisins, salt, cinnamon, and cloves, and boil this for five minutes after it first begins to bubble. Remove from heat and let cool completely (this is very important), then add flour. Dissolve baking soda in hot water then add to the flour mixture. Mix well. Pour into a greased tube pan and bake for one hour at 350 – 375 degrees.

I’ve heard of these cakes before, but never tasted or baked ‘em! Maybe now’s a good time to start? =-)

Oh my gosh! I found a recipe like this when I was looking through my mom’s recipe box after she passed away. She married in January 1941. The measurements vary a bit, but the ingredient list is the same. I have’t made the recipe yet, how do you like this one?
