Pastelitos (or “little pies”), a popular Cuban dessert, are filled with a sweet guava paste and cream cheese. These will melt in your mouth as you enjoy them hot out of the oven!
These Cuban pastries can be seen at every bakery in Miami, but I had no idea how easy they were to make at home! If you’ve never heard of guava, it has a similar taste to a strawberry rhubarb filling.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Thaw puff pastry according to the package directions.
Line a 9 x 13 cookie sheet with parchment paper so the guava won’t stick. Unfold one of the pastry sheets and lay flat on the sheet.
Cut guava into 1/4 inch slices (or however thick you’d like them to be) and place two slices side by side, about 1/2 inch apart from the next pair of guava slices (you will need two slices for each pastelito). Spread cream cheese over guava slices.
Unfold second pastry sheet and cover the guava slices. Press the top sheet down and cut into desired sizes, cutting around the guava slices, before baking. If you’re using a 9×13, you should have about 15 pastelitos on the sheet.
To add a slight glaze on top, beat together egg white and sugar. Brush glaze over the pastelitos before baking.
Bake at 400 degrees F or until golden brown.
Allow pastelitos to cool for at least 10 minutes before eating. Disfruta! (Enjoy!)
