Description

The only way this dessert could get any better is to have a second helping.

Ingredients

  • 1-¼ cup Sugar, Divided
  • ½ cups Cocoa, Divided Use
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ¼ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ cups Milk
  • ⅓ cups Butter, Melted
  • 1-½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • ½ cups Brown Sugar, Packed
  • 1-¼ cup Very Hot Water
  • Whipped Topping Or Vanilla Ice Cream

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350ºF.

In a medium bowl whisk together 3/4 sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa, flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk, butter and vanilla. Combine until smooth. Pour batter into a greased 9 inch square pan or a 6×10 pan.

In the same mixing bowl whisk together the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, the brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa. Sprinkle evenly over batter. Pour hot water over the top and DO NOT stir.

Bake for 35-40 minutes until center is almost set. Remove from oven and let stand 15 minutes. Serve cake and spoon remaining sauce from the bottom of the pan over the top. Top with whipped topping or ice cream.

That sounds perfect and even better with ice cream. I hope your husband loves it!

I am having a 60th birthday party for my husband. I am thinking of making this recipe x 5 and baking it in ramekins, so it is easy to serve. Of course with ice cream on top. What do you think?

We really liked this recipe. I did a combination of 2 different recipes, adding peanut butter to the batter… very good!

As I was pouring the water on top, I’m like there is no way this is going to work, I’ve just wasted these ingredients. Much to my surprise, it worked!! It went together very fast with ingredients already in the kitchen…bonus!
Very Good over Ice Cream!!-reading mercb1123’s post I think chocolate chip ice cream would be good with it.
Thanks!

Yum! I agree with other posters – it definitely seemed like a really strange recipe – hot water? But follow the recipe – it’s worth it, and turns out GREAT! I’m not sure HOW the pudding gets to the bottom of the pan, but the end result is a great cake (but a really moist, more interesting texture than most cakes), with an amazing pudding on the bottom.

We served it with coffee ice cream and also a mint chocolate chip ice cream – SO good.

this was quite tasty…but, it tasted just like a brownie with hot fudge on top. unfortunately similar to most brownie recipes.

When I was assembling this I thought it was the oddest recipe I have ever prepared….but it wass delicious! It’s not overly rich or sweet-just right with a big dollop of fresh whipped cream! My husband (who is NOT a chocolate eater) even ate a big bowl and told me to make it again. Thanks for sharing this!

I made this just the other day when friends came over for dinner! It was so so so so so yummy! I piled it high with whipped cream to balance out the richness and we ate it warm! I will def be making this again!
