Description

Soft, crumbly, chocolate deliciousness. My mother taught me this recipe because she believed a good dessert could not possibly come from a box!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Sugar
  • ½ cups Vegetable Shortening (e.g. Crisco)
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • ⅔ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ½ cups Cocoa Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ cups Chopped Nuts (optional)

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350º. Cream together sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla. Stir in the remaining ingredients until well combined. Spread into a well-greased glass baking dish (9x7x2). Batter will be really thick. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes. Let cool completely before cutting into squares and serving.

*Variation: Spread half the batter in the pan then top with pieces of your favorite chocolate/caramel/peanut butter/toffee candy and cover with the remaining batter. Of course, you’ll need to cook it a wee bit longer and the resulting brownie will be so gooey it’s best served in a bowl. But it’s ding dang delicious!

I used cake flour and unsweetened cocoa powder, as they were what I had on hand, and I wasn’t sure how it would taste. I’m not sure how they taste baked, but the batter was delicious and it appeared to bake well. She wasn’t kidding, the batter is crazy thick. I hope they taste as good baked. I’m not a fan of brownies but this recipe might change my mind.
