Description

This is my grandma’s recipe for chocolate pie. It’s a favorite in our family and it’s quick and easy to put together. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE PIE:
  • 5 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons Cocoa, Heaping
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 4 whole Egg Yolks (Save The Whites For The Meringue Topping)
  • 1 cup Evaporated Milk
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1-½ teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 whole Pre-baked Pie Crust
  • FOR THE MERINGUE:
  • 4 whole Egg Whites
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 5 Tablespoons Sugar

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400ºF.

For the pie, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, egg yolks, evaporated milk, and water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Then add vanilla and stir well to combine. Pour chocolate mixture into the pre-baked pie shell.

For the meringue topping, beat the egg whites and a pinch of salt on high speed until stiff. Add the sugar and continue to beat for a few more minutes. Put on top of the pie filling and bake approximately 10 minutes at 400ºF.

I prefer this pie when it is still a bit warm, but my husband likes it chilled in the refrigerator, so it’s definitely personal preference on how to serve. Enjoy!
