I am a huge fan of foods that remind me of being a kid. There is comfort in knowing that life changes, but yumminess doesn’t. Some foods are totally acceptable to eat throughout your life and some foods should probably be left alone after your 10th birthday. Like these chocolate crackles. That’s why I’m so glad I have kids now. I have an excuse to make (and eat) these all the time. Now all I need is an Atari 64 and some episodes of Wonder Woman and I can pretend that it’s 1980 again and I don’t have bathrooms to clean.
Stir all the dry ingredients together. Melt the shortening slowly in a small saucepan and pour into the dry ingredients. Stir it all together and divide between 24 patty cases. Refrigerate until firm. Eat. Swoon. Eat again.

No Cool Whip in the US? We have it in Canada!
Have you made this using butter instead of shortening? I can’t imagine making it with shortening, but that’s just because it’s a new concept to me!

Thanks Gourmet Goddess! I wonder if Crisco would work instead of Copha? Or maybe to greasy? I always have a hard time finding substitutes for US ingredients. I really, really wish we sold Cool Whip here!

ok ………. i do not need to make these to know how great they taste – I give you 5 mitts . I thought I had gone back to my childhood …… and the 80’s in Australia . The all time essential , must have at every BD party . This is up there with “frogs in a pond” = green jelly and a peppermint freddo frog in the cup .
Just read your blog and I figured you had to be from Australia. Just have to figure out an alternative for copha ? Does not exist in the USA . Great blog and love the Lentil Soup recipe .
Keep on keeping on !
