A caramel macchiato is a layered coffee drink with milk and vanilla topped with foam that has espresso poured through the foam with caramel drizzled on top. This is one of my favorite drinks, so I wanted to make a layered cupcake reminiscent of it.
1. Prepare cake mix according to box directions or use a homemade cake mix if you prefer.
2. Pour half of the cake mix into cupcake tins (filling each just over 1/4 of the way full).
3. Add coffee to the rest of the cake mix and stir until well combined. You can also add some brown food coloring if you want to make the cake a darker brown.
4. Pour brown cake mix on top of the white until the tins are about 3/4 of the way full.
5. Bake according to box directions, or about 15 to 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
6. Once cupcakes have cooled, frost with vanilla frosting or glaze and drizzle caramel sauce on top.
Since I didn’t have any frosting on hand, I made a buttercream glaze with 4 cups of powdered sugar, 1/4 cup of milk, 2 teaspoons of vanilla, and 1/2 cup of soft butter.
