This sauce is an old stand-by that my mom used to use for many dishes. I love making it to drizzle over steamed broccoli. If you have a hankering for homemade macaroni and cheese but don’t want to wait for it to bake, this sauce is great mixed in with cooked macaroni.
Melt butter in a medium saucepan, then whisk in flour, mustard, salt and pepper. Whisk until ingredients are fully incorporated and bubbly. Gradually add milk and whisk until thick and smooth. Add cheese and whisk until melted.
Should the cheese sauce be too thick after it’s fully cooked, you can always add more milk to thin it out.
