Description

This is not your typical French toast casserole. The caramel on the bottom is absorbed into the bread overnight and cooks to perfection. One of my most requested recipes!

Ingredients

  • 1-½ cup Brown Sugar, Firmly Packed
  • 1 cup Butter, Divided
  • ⅓ cups Light Corn Syrup
  • 1 loaf French Bread, Cut Into Cubes
  • 4  Eggs, Beaten
  • 2-½ cups Whole Milk Or Half-and-Half
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla
  • 3 Tablespoons Sugar, Divided
  • 3 teaspoons Cinnamon, Divided
  • ¼ teaspoons Salt

Preparation

Combine brown sugar, 3/4 cup of butter and corn syrup in a medium saucepan; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 5 minutes or just until mixture is bubbly. Do not continue cooking, or your caramel will harden.

Pour syrup evenly into a lightly greased 13 x 9 casserole pan. Arrange bread cubes over the top of the syrup.

Combine eggs, milk, vanilla, 1 Tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and salt; stir well. Gradually pour mixture over bread slices. Cover and chill at least 8 hours.

Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon, stir well. Sprinkle evenly over the soaked bread. Drizzle the remaining 1/4 cup of melted butter over the bread.

Cover with foil and bake at 350ºF for 45-50 minutes or until bubbly, taking off the foil the last 15 minutes of baking time to allow it to brown a little on top. Serve immediately.

Be sure not to cook your caramel sauce on the stove, once all of the ingredients are combined and you start to see bubbles, it’s done!

This was delicious! My caramel was just fine, but I barely melted the butter and brown sugar together before pouring in the pan. Great recipe!

very very good! I cooked the caramel sauce JUST until the butter was melted, and it did not get too hard, it was perfect.

This is my new go-to french toast casserole recipe! I LOVE it! I made a streussel topping instead of just the sugar and cinnamon, and served it with butter-flavor pancake syrup. It was a major sugar overload, but totally worth it. I found that reheating for a little bit in the microwave softened the caramel, so if you don’t serve immediately, not all is lost. You could even keep it warm in the oven on low. Thanks for sharing this great recipe!!!

This is fantastic. Unfortunately, when the recipe says “serve immediately,” believe it. I took it to work so it was about half an hour or so before we ate it, and the caramel sauce became a candied glaze stuck to the pan before we were finished. Next time (and there will be a next time because it’s SO good) I might flip it onto a platter and serve it upside down, or maybe even put the caramel on top of the bread instead of in the bottom of the pan and see how that works.

This is one of the greatest breakfasts I have ever had. I can’t wait to make it myself, and I am still telling people how good it was. Try it!
