Description

I’ve made many, many loaves of banana bread. But I never achieved perfection until I made this bread. You’ll never throw an old banana away again! The key to this bread is the buttermilk and the wonderful crust made by dusting the pan with sugar.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cups Softened Butter
  • 1-½ cup Sugar
  • 2 whole Eggs, Beaten
  • 4 whole Ripe (Black) Bananas Mashed
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ¾ teaspoons Salt
  • 2 cups Flour
  • ½ cups Buttermilk
  • Chopped Pecans Or Walnuts, Toasted (optional, For Topping)

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Spray 2 bread pans (9 inch) with nonstick cooking spray and then dust pans with granulated sugar. Set aside.

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Whisk in the eggs, mashed banana (black bananas make the best bread) and vanilla. Add baking soda and salt and mix well. Add in one cup flour until incorporated, then the buttermilk, then the last cup of flour. Do not over-mix. Pour evenly into bread pans and top with toasted chopped pecans or walnuts.

Bake at 325 degrees for 40- 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Here’s a few other tips or options:

1. If you just can’t wait for your bananas to go black, place yellow (not green) unpeeled bananas on a baking sheet and place in a heated oven for 15 minutes. Allow to cool. Peel and mash. You can also freeze black bananas until you are ready to use them. Thaw on the counter.

2. You can put chunks of ripe but firm banana and add it to the batter.

3. Banana Bread makes wonderful French Toast. Dip slices in egg and fry in butter. Yum!

I can’t thank you enough for sharing this recipe! I have been making banana bread for years and it’s always good and my honey man is always glad to smell it cooking. This time I thought I would try something different. I tried your recipe and LOVED it! The sugar dusting made it special and the nuts on top instead of in the bread… well… genius! I thought “Two loaves, cool. We’ll eat one and give the other away.” My husband would not allow me to give it away and raved about it being the best banana bread he has ever eaten. Thanks again for sharing.

LOVED IT!!!!!

…and your tip on blackening the bananas worked like a charm!!!

Thanks to the husband distracting me in the kitchen, the only change I made was to use baking powder instead of soda – not a change I’d recommend – not as pretty as the picture but it still tastes good!

I made this tonight and instead of just 2 bananas i added about 5 and had to use regular milk instead of buttermilk. It still came out wonderful and my son was asking for more!

It’s good, but it doesn’t taste much different than the banana bread I usually make. It is deliciously moist, and the sugar crust is great.

Yep, this is definitely our favorite banana bread ever! I never seem to have buttermilk on hand, so if I need to substitute I just put in plain or vanilla yogurt and it always turns out excellent. We always double the batch. Sometimes I bake them in muffin tins and we’ve never been disappointed!

You named it right! My husband said it was the best banana bread he had ever eaten. Will be making this again and again. I have bananas getting black now so I can store them in the freezer. Thanks for sharing.
