A perfect, flaky and easy basic buttermilk scone recipe that can be customized with your favorite fruit and flavors.
Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and butter. Using a fork or pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add in the buttermilk and stir until a dough ball forms.
Turn the dough out onto a well floured surface and roll out to 1/2″ thickness. You can make the scones round, square or triangular; I used a 3″ round cutter. Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the melted butter and sprinkle on the sugar.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are a very light golden brown.
Makes 8 scones that are best served fresh with a bit of your favorite preserves.
