Description

Warm, spicy donuts with caramel frosting.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Flour (I Used White Whole Wheat)
  • ¾ teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ¼ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Ginger
  • 1 pinch Allspice
  • 1 teaspoon Cloves
  • ¼ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ cups Brown Sugar, Divided
  • 1 whole Egg
  • ¼ cups Applesauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup
  • 3 Tablespoons Milk, Divided
  • 4 Tablespoons Butter, Divided
  • ½ cups Powdered Sugar

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a large bowl, mix all dry ingredients (flour through brown sugar), using only 1/4 cup of the brown sugar and setting the rest aside.

Whisk in moist ingredients (egg through butter), using only 1 tablespoon of the milk and 2 tablespoons of the melted butter.

Pour batter into a gallon-sized plastic bag and cut the corner off of the bag. Pipe the batter into a greased mini-donut pan, filling each donut space about 1/2 full (for me, this was about 22 mini donuts).

Bake in the preheated oven for about 7-8 minutes. Remove from oven and take each donut out of the pan.

Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter with 1/4 cup brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and boil for about 2 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon of milk and bring back to a boil. Add powdered sugar, using the last tablespoon of milk to help thin out the frosting if needed. Keep over low heat (otherwise it will start to crystallize) and dunk each mini donut into the frosting. Frosting should set almost immediately.

These look wonderful! I have one question: if I don’t have a mini donut pan, could I make these into muffins instead using a slightly longer bake time? Thanks!

So yummy! We made these over and over again after discovering this recipe and took them to all of our friends. We feel like professional little donut-makers!

I made the large donuts and baked them at 350 for 15 minutes as suggested by another reviewer – oh my goodness, they were delicious! Best donut recipe I’ve tried yet! Run, don’t walk, to your kitchen store or Amazon and get yourself a donut pan so you can make these gems!

Wonderful! I only got 16 doughnuts out of this recipe using my electric mini donut maker, but all were quickly devoured by my family. The carmel icing sets up quickly and the donut itself was very flavorful.

I made this recipe for an electric mini donut maker. Worked very well and the flavor is amazing. Also, I left off the frosting and substituted the brow sugar for Brown Sugar Blend Splenda (2 TBLS). Will be making again! Thank you!

These were delicious–and the frosting sets up perfectly so they look just like the picture. I made them in a regular size donut pan, so there was enough batter for 6, and they have to bake for about 10-12 minutes.
