Chocolate cake & pie cherries, oh my!
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. In a 9×13 cake pan, dump in the pie cherry filling. Spread so that it is evenly distributed. On top, pour dry, unmixed cake mix. Carefully spread to distribute. Open the can of Sprite, and gently pour over cake mix. Don’t stir, but rather, repeatedly poke the Sprite/cake mixture with a spoon. The idea is to moisten the cake mix without mixing it into the cherries underneath. Once the cake mix is mostly moistened, place cake pan into the oven and bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool and serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Note: This dish can easily be cooked in a Dutch oven with coals instead of a conventional oven.
