This is my late mother-in-law’s recipe. She used to make these for her boys to take in their saddlebags for cattle drives and camping. Great with your morning coffee.
Preheat oven to 400ºF.
In a mixing bowl using an electric mixer, cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, milk, vanilla and nutmeg and stir.
Mix buttermilk and baking soda separately, then add it into the mixture. Mix in enough flour (start with the listed amount, but add more as needed) to make a soft dough.
Dust your work surface with flour and roll out the dough to 1/4″ to 1/2″ thickness. Cut it into strips then cut across to make squares (or use a biscuit cutter). Place in a greased pan. Bake at 400ºF for 10 to 13 minutes.

you mention baking soda in the directions, but it’s not in the ingredient list…how much do you use?
