My mom made this when we were little and now I make it with my kids. All you need is a good, deep snowstorm and a few pantry ingredients. Totally takes me back!
Wait for a good, deep snowstorm. Let the snow fall a good while before scooping up snow. The first snow will clean the air, bring down polluted particulates into the bottom layer, leaving fresh, clean snow on the top. I don’t gather snow from under or around trees either, just to be safe.
Don’t pack the snow too firm in the bowl, you want to keep the fluffiness! Add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of evaporated milk. I’ve tried it with regular milk in a pinch and it’s just not the same. Buy a few cans to keep on hand–it’s real disappointing to see the snow and realize too late that you have no milk!
Stir/fold the milk into the snow, very carefully, then sprinkle the sugar in and add the vanilla. Adjust all ingredients to your own taste.
This really is a fun thing to make with your kids, and makes for some great winter memories!
