A wonderful cinnamon apple cake served with a warm sauce over the top.
Cake:
In a medium bowl, pour sugar over apples. Let stand until sugar is dissolved. Add beaten egg and oil. Sift together flour, cinnamon, and soda. Add to the apple mixture. Add nuts, if desired. Pour into a 9×9 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
Topping:
Combine sugars, flour and water in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until clear. Remove from heat. Blend in the butter and vanilla. Keep sauce hot until the cake comes out of the oven.
Remove cake from the oven and pour topping over immediately. Let stand before serving.
