Description

These were SO FUN to make. I just love getting messy, and these are about as messy as it gets. I couldn’t really think of a better name then the three words that describe these buttery bars: Sticky, Chewy, Messy. Yummy. With amazingly sticky, golden caramel oozing between a crumbly, butter cookie crust and a rich, mesmerizing marble chocolate layer, these bars will literally stop you in your tracks.

Ingredients

  • THE CHEWY BASE:
  • 2-½ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ⅓ cups Sugar
  • ¾ cups Butter
  • _____
  • THE STICKY CARAMEL FILLING:
  • 1 stick Butter
  • ½ cups Light Brown Sugar
  • 2 cans (14 Oz. Can) Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • _____
  • THE MESSY CHOCOLATE TOPPING:
  • 4 ounces, weight Semi-sweet Or Dark Baking Chocolate
  • 4 ounces, weight White Chocolate

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Make chewy base by combining all ingredients, kneading until a dough forms. Cover and chill the dough for about 30 minutes.

Once dough is chilled, press into a greased casserole dish or brownie pan and poke with a fork. Bake for about 20 mins or until golden brown and firm, then set aside to cool.

Make caramel by melting all caramel ingredients together, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat until simmering for about 5 minutes or until it is thick and a caramel color (make sure you stir the whole time or the bottom will burn, yuck!).

Pour the caramel over the cookie base, then chill in the fridge until cold.

Once cold, melt brown and white chocolates separately and spread into 4 alternating stripes (white, brown, white, brown) over the caramel mixture. Using a toothpick, make big, loopy swirls all throughout the chocolate.

Top with nuts or toffee if desired and let cool until in hardens. For easy cutting, run a large knife under hot water with every slice.

I think it would be just as good if not better with sugar cookie dough. And I also love things sickeningly sweet!

This sounds so good! I think I may try to make it by using a store-bought sugar cookie dough as the bottom layer because A) I’m lazy, and B) I like things that are sickeningly sweet!

I made these last night. Saw the recipe and thought that looks great! I made the dough and maybe I didn’t knead it enough, it never really came together into a dough, kind of crumbly like it needed something else to hold it together. I forged ahead and chilled it, baked it and it didn’t bake all that well. Took closer to 40 minutes to get it to turn golden. Followed the rest of the instructions. This morning brought it into work, the bottom was too hard and the caramel is extremely gooey.
Maybe I didn’t knead long enough and maybe someone will have better luck than I did. But I don’t think I’ll make them again. Thanks for the recipe though!
