Description

A winning combination of flavors!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE DANISH:
  • ¼ cups Butter, At Room Temperature
  • 4 ounces, weight Cream Cheese, At Room Temperature
  • ¼ cups Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • ¼ cups Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 whole Sheets Of Thawed Puff Pastry
  • 1  Egg Beaten With 2 Tablespoons Of Water
  • 3  Apples Peeled And Sliced Thin
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • FOR THE CARAMEL:
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Water
  • ½ cups Whipping Cream
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 1 pinch Salt

Preparation

To make the danishes, preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

Mix together butter, cream cheese, flour, lemon juice, 1/4 cup of sugar, and vanilla and set aside.

On a floured, clean surface, cut each thawed puff pastry sheet into 9 even sized squares. You should end up with 18 squares total.

Brush the edges of the squares with egg wash and fold pastry an 1/8 of an inch in on each side to form a little edge. Poke holes in each pastry with a fork and sprinkle with sugar.

Drop 1 teaspoonful of the cheese mixture onto the squares and spread it out evenly up to the edges that you formed. I used my fingers here to spread it out, it was way easier than working with the spoon.

Arrange sliced apples on top of cheese mixture. Brush the edges of the dough with the egg wash and carefully transfer the pastries to a greased baking sheet. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool in the pans.

To make the salted caramel, mix sugar and water in a small sauce pan over medium heat. Once the sugar clumps together to form small looking rocks, add in the cream, stirring constantly. At this point it looks as if you have ruined your caramel, but just keep stirring and the rocks with dissolve as the liquid bubbles. Once melted, add in the butter and salt and mix to combine. Drizzle over pastries and enjoy!

This recipe looks so yummy BUT my family are not big apple fans….. do you think I could substitue fresh peaches? Work that work???

I finally made these tonight and they were fabulous! As I mentioned in my email – I did use peaches instead of apples and the result was yummy! My hubby is not a “sweet-eater” and he ate three of them right out of the oven! :) I will say that like kayjus33 above, I too might use a bought caramel sauce as it would be a lot easier, but I like the individual size pastries. Thx for sharing!! :-)

These were delicious, but I think next time I can take a few short cuts, I will just make two big ones instead of cutting them into the squares, and just cut them after they are cooked, and next time I will buy the caramel ice cream topping to save a little time. But my whole family loved them.
