My mother in law who would be in her 90’s gave me this recipe almost 50 years ago. Don’t know where she got it from but she called it poor mans frosting. We are from NJ. I was watching pioneer woman today and this was the first time I’ve ever seen the recipe.

When I was in fourth grade in 1954, friends of my parents stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC and asked their waiter for the recipe. They were surprised by a $100 extra charge on their bill at checkout (IN 1954!!!). So she sold the recipe for the cake and icing to nine friends for $10 each, my mother being one of those friends. It is the best ever to this day.

are you sure its one cup of butter? my frosting was really separated looking with the butterfat. Didn’t like it very much

This frosting was superb! A great hit! I enjoyed how soft and fluffy it stayed. :)

Apparently I’m in the minority…somehow this didn’t work for me. The consistency was great (I was worried it would be too soft/runny) but in the end just tasted very buttery (which is surprising because I added a little extra sugar to make it slightly sweeter). Out of all “cooked frosting” recipes, this is the best one I’ve tried but I think I’ll have to stick with regular buttercream.

My family always has red velvet cake on holidays and this is the frosting my grandpa always made for it. I’d never heard of/seen it served any other way until I was in my early 20s. It’s still weird to me that cream cheese frosting is the “traditional” frosting – this one is SO much better!
