Description

Homemade caramel is a simple, inexpensive treat to prepare. Perfect for get-togethers and gifts, this rich pie will surprise your loved ones in the best possible way!

Ingredients

  • 2 cans Sweetened Condensed Milk (14 Oz. Each)
  • 1 whole Graham Cracker Pie Crust
  • 1 container Whipped Topping (8 Oz)

Preparation

Submerge the two unopened cans of sweetened condensed milk in a stockpot full of water, several inches above the cans’ tops. Place this pot on top of the stove and boil for four hours. From time to time, it may be necessary to carefully add more water to the pot to keep the cans submerged.

After 4 hours, use tongs to remove the cans and let them cool. Once they have cooled to a safe temperature, open the cans. Pour the caramel into the graham cracker pie crust. Place the pie into the fridge for three to four hours.

When you are ready to serve it, spread whipped topping on top of the pie, and enjoy!

Sure thing! A crockpot version would resemble something like this:
Instead of boiling the cans of sweetened condensed milk on the stovetop, submerge them in a crockpot on low heat, simmering for eight hours. Then procede as above. :)

Oh my gosh, I didn’t know condensed milk did that when boiled! Do you suppose this could be done in a crockpot to avoid babysitting the stove all afternoon?

Delicious! This recipe is simple and so worth the boiling time! It is now a must have pie in our Thanksgiving recipe list!

I have made this pie many times and it is so easy and tasty. It never ceases to amaze me how the can goes into the water full of sweetened condensed milk and comes out caramel. And it has interesting history behind it too – wives and mothers used to send cans of sweetened condensed milk to their husbands/sons when they were away at war because they were easy to ship and could be easily boiled for a sweet treat.

The pie is also good if you add a layer of sliced bananas to the bottom of the crust before you pour the caramel over top.
