Description

This special dessert combines all of the great flavors of a traditional apple pie in a bar. They are so much easier to make, and go a lot further!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE CRUST:
  • 2 Tablespoons All-purpose Flour
  • 2 whole Store-bought 9-inch Frozen Or Refrigerated Pie Crusts, Thawed
  • FOR THE FILLING:
  • 8 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • ½ cups Brown Sugar
  • ½ cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon All-purpose Flour
  • 10 whole Apples, Peeled, Cored And Sliced Very Thin
  • 1-½ Tablespoon Ground Cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoons Allspice
  • ¼ teaspoons Fine Sea Salt
  • ½ cups Water (as Needed)
  • FOR THE CRUMBLE TOPPING:
  • 3 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 1-½ cup Rolled Oats
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • ¾ cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Ground Cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoons Fine Sea Salt
  • ¼ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter, Cold And Cut Into Cubes
  • ½ cups Chopped Pecans
  • ¼ cups Chopped Walnuts

Preparation

Preheat your oven to 375 F and heavily grease a large, lipped baking sheet (approximately 15 x 17 inch size).

Dust a flat surface with flour and remove both pie crusts from their packaging. Roll the dough out and cut each crust into 2 large rectangles, by trimming the rounded sides with a paring knife and piecing them back together until you have a large enough sheet of dough that will fit your large baking sheet (approximately 15 x 17 inch). Very carefully, fit the dough into the baking sheet, trimming and piecing back together where needed. Poke the dough a few times with a fork and set aside.

For the filling, combine the butter and sugars in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet. Melt the mixture over medium-high heat then whisk in the flour until combined. Add the apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and sea salt. Toss the ingredients together to combine. Cook the apples over medium-high heat for 20-30 minutes or until they are softened and the liquid has completely evaporated. If the apples are still tough at this point, and the liquid has already evaporated, add water (1/4 cup at at time) and continue to cook until the apples have softened. Remove from heat and let the apple mixture cool for 5 minutes.

Once cool, scoop the apple filling on top of your dough. Spread it out evenly so that it coats the entire pan, leaving no gaps. Set aside.

For the crumble topping, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, sea salt and baking soda in a large bowl. Whisk the ingredients together to combine. Add the cubed butter, and work with your hands until coarse crumbles form. Fold in the pecans and the walnuts.

Pour the crumble on top of the apple filling. Spread it out so that it evenly coats the entire pan, and then press down to produce an even, firm layer. Bake in the oven at 375 F for 45 minutes (or up to an hour) or until the top is golden brown.

Remove from oven, set pan on a rack and let it cool completely. Cut into equal-sized bars and serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
